Tree services in Margate : five standard operations, done properly.

The mature trees behind your hedge, the sycamores, ashes, holm oaks and Corsican pines that fill Thanet back gardens and holiday-let plots, need different work at different points in their life. I do the five operations that come up on almost every Margate garden: pruning, crown thinning, crown raising, crown reduction and deadwooding. Ash-dieback assessed as part of every quote on any ash. TPO and Thanet DC conservation-area applications handled where the tree is protected.

Pruning

Selective removal of dead, diseased or structurally unsound parts, branches, buds, roots. The general tree work every mature Thanet garden tree needs on a cycle. Formative pruning on young trees; maintenance pruning on established ones. £180–600 typical.

Crown thinning

Selective removal of live branches to reduce canopy density. On the Thanet coast this is the honest first answer for anything that catches an easterly gale, wind passes through instead of loading the tree as a sail. £250–800 typical.

How thinning works

Crown raising

Also called crown elevation. Removing lower branches to give pedestrian, vehicle or building clearance, or to open a sightline. Common on Cliftonville front-garden limes and Westbrook driveway sycamores. £220–600 typical.

When to raise

Crown reduction

Reducing the overall height or spread by cutting branches back to lateral limbs of a sensible size. Not topping, that's the wrong approach and I don't do it. On a holiday-let plot this is the sensible pre-season call before a mature tree grows into the property. £350–1,200 typical.

Reduction vs topping

Deadwooding

Removal of dead, dying or diseased branches from the canopy. Purely for safety and tree health, nothing structural changes. On the salt-loaded windward side of a coastal tree, dead limbs accumulate faster than inland; annual deadwooding is often the right cycle. £180–550 typical.

Also on the boundary

Hedge cutting, and height and width reduction, all the boundary work you'd expect from a hedge specialist, done to the same standard as the tree work. Salt-tolerant species knowledge on every quote.

Before we cut

TPO and conservation-area checks : included.

Central Margate and most of Cliftonville sit inside one of Thanet District Council's conservation areas, Margate (1978, extended 1994), Margate Seafront (1997), Northdown (1985), plus the Cliftonville cluster of Dalby Square, Clifton Place & Grotto Gardens, Ethelbert Road & Athelstan Road, Edgar Road & Sweyn Road, Norfolk/Warwick/Surrey Road and Northdown Road. Any tree over 75mm in diameter at 1.5m inside a CA needs six weeks' section-211 notice to Thanet DC before work. A tree with a Tree Preservation Order needs a full application with 8 weeks' notice. I check both, file the paperwork, and quote knowing which window we're working in, no last-minute stop-work order on the day. Fine for cutting a CA tree without notice runs up to £20,000 in the magistrates' court.

On coastal-facing plots the salt-load matters as much as the CA rules: the windward third of any Thanet tree ages faster than the leeward two-thirds. That shows up as dieback in the crown, brittle wood on the seaward limbs, and heavier deadwood yield year on year. I plan the cut window around it, late summer for beech and hornbeam where they've been used inland-style, dormant-season for the salt-battered sycamores and limes.
